Like all video projectors anywhere near it’s price, the RioHD-LED-2 is strictly standard definition. Any reference to high definition refers to the signals that this projector can accept. But no matter how high def the signal going in, the picture displayed is always 480p with an aspect ratio of 4 X 3.

This thing is amazing for Gaming and movies from a blu-ray player or computer. Hooking it up to a HD cable service isn’t the best. as it kinda looks like a standard definition even through the HDMI cord. hooking it up to a VCR or using the RCA cords isn’t that good. The speakers in the system are only good for small rooms. No need really for a projector screen, it looks really good even on my dirty white walls, or the blue wall in showed it on.

The Optoma DS317 DLP Multimedia Projector lives up to its marketing materials. It is simple and easy to use, projects a clear image in small or medium-sized rooms and has the lumens to be seen in a moderately bright room. (I haven’t tried it in a large hall yet). The price is fantastic for small business owners, teachers and others who have to operate on a tight budget, yet you still get more than you paid for. I installed the software on my Macbook Pro, connected the ViewSonic PJD5123 and fired it up. My computer (running OS X 10.6.7) recognized the projector and the computer screen’s image shone on the white wall across the room, but it was very blurry. My heart sank. Thinking I’d bought a pig in a poke, I began lamenting the irritation of having to ship it back. Then, I began to turn the adjustments this way and that, and the picture on the wall became as clear as the one on the laptop screen. Was I ever relieved!

I have owned this projector for over a year now (~1000 hours). Still no problems, and it performs as well as day one. As with other projectors, works best in a darker room where you can control the ambient light. I have had time to compare it to newer projectors, and especially the new LED and 3D televisions. While the colors and depth perception are not as good as what you would see on those higher end home theater displays, you certainly get a great value for what you pay for.

3000 lumens gives amazing brightness with a projection on my wall about 8-10ft across. HDMI input so you don’t have to worry about signal quality issues from analog VGA cables. Web browsing is crisp and easily readable from across the room, and movies look great also. And the default settings are good, right out of the box.

Some of this merits explaining. Sports gamma is the brightest of the three available gamma curves. Unlike the same mode on other projectors, it has very little green push. It’s also good about adding definition to the blacks without messing with the black point. I compensated for the green with a slight tint adjustment.

I ordered this projector for the Superbowl and was not disappointed. Watching the game in a darkened room (but still lights present), it threw a 10′, 720p image and looked perfect even on a wall instead of a screen.
This projector is best used with a receiver – it only has one of each input (composite, component, d-sub 15, HDMI), but running a lot of cables to a projector is a pain anyway.
Until march, there’s an MIR where you can get a free bulb, making this an amazing deal with its 5,000 hour low-energy lamp life.

Just got this last night, after doing extensive research on a dlp at entry level price. It is my first projector, straight out of the box the colors and contrast was awesome. I streamed a movie out of netflix and couldn’t believe how good the picture looked, skin tones very true. I had it projected on a fixed 120 and the best part, the aspect ratio changes auto to fit the screen best based on the input movie.
